Here's the full memo obtained by Insider that was sent to Times staffers in July, announcing the appointments of Kang and Coy: Kang has been a writer at large for The New York Times Magazine and was a founding editor for the now-defunct sports and culture site Grantland. Coy, a longtime Bloomberg Businessweek writer and editor, announced on Twitter that he joined the paper as an economics writer - but did not mention the newsletter initiative. Until now, the Times had been staffing up for the project but keeping it under wraps. Meanwhile, the paper has rearticulated its rules for reporters' outside work, including paid and unpaid newsletters, books, and podcast deals. More newsletters are on the way too, according to the Times announcement. Former Styles editor Choire Sicha was set to work on the effort at least temporarily before he decamped for New York Magazine. ![]() The paper has been recruiting writers inside and outside the organization for the effort. As Insider reported in April, Substack has made overtures to Times writers with large advances to lure them to their platform. Times editors in both the newsroom and in Opinion had been working on the newsletter project for months as the format booms in popularity across the industry. The subscriber-only project will include existing Times newsletters like On Politics, On Tech With Shira Ovide, On Soccer with Rory Smith, Smarter Living, and newsletters from current writers Jamelle Bouie, Paul Krugman and Frank Bruni, according to the Times. Times readers without subscriptions will still be able to read popular Times newsletters including The Morning and DealBook. The newsletter offering will span both the Opinion section and the newsroom, the paper said. Insider previously reported that Jay Caspian Kang and Peter Coy joined the paper's Opinion section as the Times readied the project. The paper on Thursday announced a roster of more than 15 new and existing newsletters that will be available only to subscribers, including from writers Tressie McMillan Cottom, John McWhorter, and Kara Swisher.
